Maria Pettersson from FutureArcticLives Work Package 3 was interviewed for BBC News about the plight of reindeer herders in the face of the ongoing industry boom in the Arctic.

Maria, who is a professor in Environmental Law at Luleå University of Technology highlights that for the Sami community, the problem is (at least!) twofold.

On the one hand, the Sami community is more affected by climate change than other people for several reasons - the traditional reindeer herding being a case in point. From this point of view, the Sami are much in need of the green transition.

On the other hand, activities like reindeer herding are at risk of adverse impacts from the green transition itself.

It is, therefore, critical that the approval and implementation of activities that aim to combat climate change are carried out with great consideration to other land-use interests.
